To be honest, I’ve been a little discouraged, overwhelmed, and lonely. It’s okay, I was told this is normal for people who spend hours and hours taking care of others and moving away from their social support and comfort zone.# However, I realized that my emotions come and go but the vision that I have for Haiti will not expire. I am determined to keep going because I know that I am called to my people in Haiti, specifically children. I’m writing to let you know how I’ve been and how you can support the work that I’m doing. Yes, I will ask you for money, just letting you know now just in case you don’t feel like reading the rest of my heart. (If that’s you click here to donate or send a check to 205 W Tulpehocken St Philadelphia, Pa 19144 :-)

As most of you know, I am currently in Philadelphia, PA doing what I call on the job training (graduate school) at Eastern University. I’m pursuing a degree in Urban Studies with a concentration in Arts and Transformation. My current proposed thesis research is art-based approaches to combating malnutrition in rural communities. You can read the article I wrote entitled “Life of a Child in Haiti”.

My assistantship with BuildaBridge International started in January after I settled into a third new city and god-forsaken climate! ( I survived my first winter). I am now THE Haiti Arts Relief and Development Coordinator, check out our strategic plan. BuildaBridge is primarily a volunteer organization. I’m very fortunate to find an organization like BuildaBridge to provide me with the outlet to not just share my vision for Haiti but implement it. Drs. Corbitt and Nix-Early, the founders, have been very supportive in providing me with the tools to build something that is sustainable. In March, I went on my first survey trip to meet with potential alliances and I was able to meet with UNICEF. I presented the vision and they seemed to really like it, so we’ll see where that goes. I was also able to go back to Shalom Village Orphanage with a group of friends who joined me later on the trip and man the kids have gotten bigger! I’m so happy now in this new position, I not only get to impact the children at Shalom but children throughout Haiti living in shelters and institutional homes. It’s like God couldn’t of created a better path for me. Check out the article I wrote about “Finding Your Path”.

This new position is not a salaried one, not yet anyway. I’m still applying for grants, planning fundraisers and seeking support. This is where you come in. I know some of you have been consistently donating towards Shalom Village which is awesome and I’m very thankful that you continue to do this. I am also asking for you to support the vision that I have to help children throughout Haiti. BuildaBridge International has years of experience in working in communities of poverty and crisis and also has the capacity for administration which allows me to focus totally on Haiti. I plan to go back to Haiti on June 16th, 2011 to stay for the entire summer to coordinate an arts camp at an elementary school, provide assistance at Shalom Village, and meet with more potential alliances. I need to raise $20,000 for the project this year. Your contribution is tax-deductible (and BuildaBridge has an accountant to take care of your statements for you :-). You’ll need to make the check out to BuildaBridge and write “Haiti Project” in the ‘for’ line in order to receive income tax donate credit.

Become a part of this vision, together we can make it happen!

Do you remember where you were at 4:53 pm on Tuesday, January 12, 2010? Perhaps you were getting ready to clock out of your 9-5, or sitting in rush hour traffic, or picking up the kids from their after-school program? Do you recall? For most Haitians living in the states and abroad, January 12th will be a day they will never forget.
Just one year ago, the Republic of Haiti was hit by a 7.0 magnitude earthquake where more than 300,000 people died and least 3 million have been injured and have lost their homes according to USAID. Not only that, with continuous aftershocks, floods from Hurricane Tomas , the spread of Cholera, and unsettled political disputes, the Haitian population is left in a state of fear, despair, hopelessness, confusion, and psychological trauma.

This week, many organizations and individuals are commemorating those who've lost their lives due to the catastrophe. Some are celebrating the bonds and uniformity of those who answered the call to solidarity, while others are revisiting their commitments to the relief and development efforts in Haiti.

Even though progress has been slow, the US government provided $1.1 billion in 2010 for relief efforts in Haiti. In November, USAID reported the completion of 9,739 transitional shelters (t-shelters), sufficient to house nearly 48,700 individuals. While working closely with other agencies, safe drinking water, food, household items, sanitation facilities, and health services were also made available to those affected.

However, life in the transitional shelters, otherwise known as camps, has not been ideal. The camps are crowded with children and their families, clean water and sanitation is scarce, and the health care services are hardly sufficient. The most affected people in Haiti right now are the children. Many have been orphaned or separated from their families. According to UNICEF, one of the long term development partners in Haiti, stated that more than 750,000 children have been directly affected. One of the concerns is the extreme fragility in children living in crisis, poverty, and trauma. Many of them are vulnerable due to the lack of education, health care, and most of all genuine nurture.

That is why, to date, the US government has established the Operation Protect Children initiative which focuses on the development of child friendly spaces. This plan is in line with BuildaBridge's mission to meet the needs of the most vulnerable. So we too are revisiting our commitment to the children in Haiti. With over 10 years of serving children and families in transitional homes throughout the United States and abroad, BuildaBridge International understands the importance of healing through the arts amongst those who've been traumatized. In the past year, we worked in an orphanage creating a safe place for kids to play, and in a school developing an after-school arts program. You can view these by clicking on the links.

By providing children an outlet to express themselves through art, music, dance, drama, and creative writing, they actually tap into a realm of escape, and healing.

This year, as part of our Haiti Arts Relief and Development initiative, we will continue our arts relief efforts with Practical Compassion in Pont Sonde, Haiti as well as building relationships with local and international organizations that are directly associated with Haiti.

So, do you remember where you were on that disastrous day? Let's continue to keep the people of Haiti on our minds and in our hearts. We all have a responsibility to put our hands and resources together for the greater good of this world. To get involved with BuildaBridge's next trip to Haiti contact Maeva Renaud.

To support the Haiti Arts Relief and Development initiative financially, donate online or send your contributions to BuildaBridge International 205 W Tulpehocken Street Philadelphia, PA 19144. Enter Haiti Arts Relief.

The Haiti Arts Relief and Development (HARD) initiative is an arts intervention and restoration development program that focuses on children in communities of poverty and crisis. This initiative will come to fruition through strong alliances with individuals and organizations that are involved in the reconstruction and rebuilding efforts in the Republic of Haiti since the January 12, 2010 earthquake that destroyed the capital and surrounding cities and the Cholera disease epidemic that spread throughout the country.

Our main objectives are to create safe places, provide healing and education for children living in transitional environments (shelters and residential care institutions), and train local artists and community workers in creative arts methods of education, healing, and the environment. We believe in holistic transformation. As part of the restorative development, the initiative offers training to Haitian artist, teachers, health care workers and residential care centers staff in arts-assisted learning, classroom management and curriculum writing, therapeutic art skills and psychological first aid.

Maeva's Ode to Ayiti

Heading Back to Haiti on 3/18-3/22

These past couple of weeks have been crazy, in a good way. Making some progress as far as working with organizations in Haiti. Next week, I'll be going to Cap Haitien, where a facility was donated to house children that have been affected, lost their parents, or parents aren't able to provide. We were able to secure staff on the ground to take care of the children, 24 of them will be coming to the facility which we are now calling 'Shalom Village' (Peace Village). 4 Kids are from Port-au-Prince, 4 from La Gonaive, and the rest from Cap Haitien. Their age range are 3-9 years old. I'm flying out on thursday and coming back on Monday. I was going to bring food down there but unfortunately its REALLY EXPENSIVE!!!! So it would be best to purchase food on the ground in Haiti. We will be flying in to Santiago, DR and driving into Haiti

I'm asking you all to help support the kids that we'll be taking care of by making a monetary donation online at http://www.changeiscomingcampaign.com/ or by mail at 320 S. Flamingo Road #298 Pembroke Pines, FL 33027 ( Make checks payable to Arts of Color Worship Arts Institute, Inc)

We need $700.00 to purchase food to last for the month.

This is going to be one of my main projects this year (to help the village become self sufficient) I maybe moving down to Haiti for a while (God willing) but nevertheless I'll be keep you updated on what's going on down there and how you can help.

P.S. Please make a donation to the website so we can purchase food for the kids.

Much thanks in advance!

Maeva

Update on Trip to Haiti

Hi Everyone,

A week ago today, I was able to travel to Port-au-Prince, Haiti and bring medical supplies, food, and tents to those in need. Words cannot truly describe my experience there but I must say that I was highly disappointed, frustrated, annoyed, and angry. When I got to my family members who were laying down on card board boxes underneath a make shift tent out of sticks and sheets, they told me that I was the first one to come to their aid.

Imagine if I had not gone, if I had not been able to raise the funds to charter a plane and bring down supplies myself to Haiti. Would my family had gotten any help? God only knows.

As I spoke to other people in the community and in Champs De Mars, I was told that they haven't been receiving any aid. I interviewed several officers in the US Army regarding the aid and they shared with me different points of views.

1. They are waiting on instructions from higher command

2. They are speaking to the people to find out their needs

3. They havent come up a structure to distribute the aid effectivelly yet

This really pissed me off, maybe I don't understand what the heck they are waiting for, but I can't just wait until "whom ever is in charge" to devise a plan to distribute. Too many people have already died. Too many people are hungry, too many people are thirsty. We have to act now!

I'm planning on going back again myself to bring more supplies and food to the people that I met. A majority of the people I met on Champs De Mars gave me their contact information and we created our own plan on how to distribute to the people who aren't connected to a major NGO. I also connected with a church, whose lot is filled with victims under makeshift tents. They definitely need food, water, and medical supplies. Something that tore me a part was watching the kids playing with sticks and rocks. One little girl named Maria asked me to bring her back a coloring book.

I'm a little weak right now, going to try to rest this weekend. But next week, I'll be back full force and keep you all posted.

Blessings,

Maeva Renaud
View My Photo Album

PS. Lauderdale to Port-au-Prince. The plan is to 1. Find my family and represent them at the US Embassy in Haiti to try to get them out, 2. Go to Leogane and Petit Groave to set up a make shift clinic 3. Connet with other grass roots organizations in Haiti to find out their needs to see how we can help.

My father sent me his notes, unfortunately he got sick and will be leaving Haiti tomorrow, so I'll be on my own down there, not really but my dad won't be with me :-(

Here's what he said:
Notes from the field
As of January 24, the death toll from Jan 12 earthquake: 112250 deaths and 194,000 injured
Expect a country with thousands of amputated young adults
More than 235000 people have left Port-au-Prince. The largest influx to GONAIVES
The number of people living in temporary shelter could be as high 800,000
The NGO and humanitarian community have only 3500 tents in Haiti!
People need TENT, TENTS, and sleeping bags!
There was a tsunami in Petit Paradis in the Nord West of Haiti.
Frustation Frustation Frustation
There is no Emergency Operation Center in Haiti.
Not one EOC for the entire country
The Haitian governement is not directly involved in food distribution
Let's pray GOD:. NO RAIN please! Everybody is sleeping under the stars

Good news, I found an organization who is willing to ship goods to the southern ports of Haiti to avoid the bottle neck in Port-au-Prince.
I'm also trying to work on a centralized shelter in Cap Haitien, but I'll let you all know more details later. I've been corresponding with him to find out the needs of the people. I was suppose to bring him medical supplies so we can go over to Leogane to help areas that haven't been helped yet. So far my flight arrangements have been DELAYED DUE TO FUEL ISSUES! Gas in Haiti is now $100 per gallon. And most planes are getting their fuel from other countries. So right now I may be leaving on Tuesday- God willing.

I spoke with my father, who went down to Haiti with the Haitian Medical Association, and this is what he reported to me:

"Status report

From the field

Frustation

My biggest effort was to create a shelter.

We have a location

We want to create a shelter for 10,000 people

I had meetings on Saturday with NGO and Humanitarian group

No distribution of tents in Port-au-Prince.

People are improving their tent with clothes and linen

Water is distributed in the ad hoc shelter

Food distribution is poorly organized"

People NEED

1.-Shelter

2.-Sleeping bag

3.-Money

4.-Food

5. That website also has the Guidelines available in French and Kreyol, if you should need them.

Please be aware that CIDI will also be reaching out to US representatives on the Hill with constituents from the Haitian diaspora, as well as various diaspora groups and the embassy/consulates.

http://www.cidi.org/guidelines/guide_ln.htm

http://www.cidi.org/media/faq.htm

Haitian Relief- Bring Your Donations & Supplies

As most of you may know, my native country Haiti was hit by an earthquake and is in dire need of assistance. There are plenty of artists who use their gifts not only to make a profit, but to truly impact the lives of people. I'm very blessed and fortunate to know such artists and had the opportunity to "chat" with them on a one on one basis.

Name: Dalhia Patrice Perryman
Hometown: Currently in West Palm Beach, Florida
Art Form(s): Visual Artist, Poet, Jewelry, Dance

Maevatheartist: I know you've been to the site , what did you think of it?
Dalhia0308: I thought it was phenomenal...it's very inspiring to see how other artists are impacting their piece of the planet.
Maevatheartist: Yes, I meet a plethora of artists on a day to day basis. Especially in the West Miramar and Pembroke Pines area. South Florida is full of talent. And what I've noticed is that a lot of the artists are really about something, something greater than just their art form.
Now I know you are involved in a lot of things, can you tell me what you've been up lately?
Dalhia0308: Its easier to say what I'm not involved in. I'm an American Red Cross Disaster Action Team member in training to aide people devastated by wildfires, house fires and hurricanes. I'm also a new case worker with the Red Cross helping to reunite Holocaust survivors with their families. In two weeks, I will begin my sixth year as a Susan G Komen for the Cure volunteer (a breast cancer foundation), and my first year as a member of their speaker's bureau.
Maevatheartist: Wow, how do you relate what you do with your art?
Dalhia0308: My art is how I express the causes I believe in. In my dance, my poetry and art I address pressing social issues, ie, racism, AIDS, domestic violence, genital mutilation, Darfur. Often people will receive your message easier when its disguised as art. Like the quote says "It takes a spoonful of sugar to make the medicine go down."
Maevatheartist: That is true. What is the main message you try to address in your work?
Dalhia0308: I guess the main point of my work is to inform people that there is a world out their larger than themselves and that they have not only the responsibility but also the power to positively affect change in that community, You don't have to be a King, Gandhi or Mandela to leave your mark on the world. We all can do SOMETHING!
Maevatheartist: Preach sistah, preach!
Maevatheartist: So who is your target audience? who are you speaking to?
Dalhia0308: Heck! My work as a whole is for whoever will listen but a lot of my work is aimed at young black girls. I want them to feel that they are queens...no matter what images the world slings at them!
Maevatheartist: why young black girls?
Dalhia0308: Because a few years ago, I WAS that little black girl that was told I was ugly, worthless, wouldn't amount to anything, would be pregnant before I finished high school. I not only beat those stereotypes, I destroyed them in my life! Now its my responsibility to let young ladies know they don't have to believe what is said. I've often heard it said 'it's not what they call you, it's what you answer to'
Maevatheartist: You remind me of someone else I interviewed who mentioned the same thing, do you think this is a big issue in the African American community?
Dalhia0308: Oh most definitely! Probably bigger than we like to admit to
Maevatheartist: What do you think needs to be done to address the issue and what kind of solutions would you suggest?
Dalhia0308: Like I said before everything doesn't have to be a worldwide campaign. If every older woman took one younger woman and imparted knowledge, they'd find that they have already impacted a whole community, because that young woman is a future, mother, wife, community member, worker, grandmother.... Think of how many lives you just reached through that one girl!
Maevatheartist: Were you that one girl? who impacted you with your art and social service?
Dalhia0308: Yes I was/am that girl. It takes a village....Different teachers provided, free art supplies, school supplies, dance leotards etc. The biggest person to impact my life however was a woman named Sandra Kay Papakostas. She was my gifted teacher in school. Her leading influenced my cancer and AIDS work, my art, writing, oratory, pageantry and the person I am today. She taught me my worth and told me my art was a catalyst 4 change. I owe her a lot and hope wherever she is that she is proud
Maevatheartist: So what is your latest art piece? Are you working on anything new?
Dalhia0308: I got a grant to provide artwork to organizations that empower women and young girls. I am doing a piece to be used as a fundraiser for an organization in Miami called Girl Power that works with at risk teen/middle school girls
Maevatheartist: Awesome, where can people view your work Dalhia?
Dalhia0308: A website is in the works for both my art and jewelry..so more to come on that. In the meantime, the next work on my calendar is not until the last week in February...the Lake Worth Street Painting Festival (Lake Worth, FL)
Maevatheartist: I'll definitely want to come then!
Dalhia0308: Please do, its free to the public
Maevatheartist: Thank you so much Dalhia for "chatting" with me today. I do wish you the best on all your future endeavors.

Profiling DJ Scoobz- Mix Master on the Move

ARTIST: DJ SCOOBZ
AGE: 30
HOMETOWN: BOSTON , MASS
ART FORM: MAKING, MIXING MUSIC, TURNTABLISM (IF THATS A WORD LOL)
LINE OF WORK: DJ, PRODUCER, REMIXER, AUDIO ENGINEER, EVENT PLANING , PROMOTIONS, ARTIST DEVELOPMENT, MANAGEMENT, AND FOUNDER AND PRESIDENT OF PHATT TRAXX PRODUCTIONS

Maevatheartist: Would you consider yourself then an artist or an entrepreneur?
Djscoobz: both, i started as an artist and later became an entrepreneur
Maevatheartist: How long have you been mixing? Djscoobz: u kinda have to to both if you wanna make a living as an artist. u have to market urself. ive been mixing since 1992
Maevatheartist: What got you into mixing?
Djscoobz: just the love of music. as a kid i was was always recording tapes from the radio. i even recorded BET music videos on vhs. i gues i got hooked to the whole hip hop movement and its elements
Maevatheartist: What kind of projects are you working on now?
Djscoobz: workin on original music now. writing and producing( a big difference form just makin beats ,anyone can do that)
Maevatheartist: so you're working with artists now?
Djscoobz: i have a few djs w/ phatt traxx djs so im gettin them ready to shut it down. wanna put my own stuff out first. wanna put sum party records out there, sort of like fatman scoop did
Maevatheartist: So where can people here your mixes?
Djscoobz: on http://www.djscoobz.com . i got a few mixes on there now that u can download for free. and im workin on a mixtape now. probably be done late aug early september
Maevatheartist: Awesome, I'll definetely check it out. Recently, I've been fortunate to get a taste of one of SF's emerging artist, Lavie. She actually came and shared one of her songs at the open-mic event that I host on Wednesday evenings, and the audience was screaming for more. So of course I had to get with her and find out some more about her music.
Maeva: Hey Lavie what's going on with you girl
laviemusic25: My face hurts. Lol. Took this tooth out
Maeva: your face hurts? wow...I'm sorry to hear that.
were you at the dentist?
laviemusic25: Yes. They took it out that's why I didn't speak this morning
Maeva: so listen, on my website, http://www.changeiscomingcampaign.com/
I list up-coming events and feature artists interviews
laviemusic25: Ok
Maeva: The way I do my interviews is through "chatting" like we are doing now
its nothing formal, very chill laid back be yourself
laviemusic25: Ok
Maeva: So you are actually the first artist that I'm interviewing for my blog, how does that make you feel Lavie?
laviemusic25: It's an honor. ;-)
Maeva: kewl, so tell me a little bit about yourself, what do you do?
laviemusic25: I'm 26. I've been saved for 8 years and still learning and pushing toward the mark. I am a vocalist for Christ. I sing gospel music only. I feel like God gave me my voice so I will return it to him. For him to get the glory
Maeva: so what makes you different from other gospel vocalists?
laviemusic25: The thing that makes me different is that I can cross over into all styles of music and still sound like me. I am who I am.
Maeva: So how would you describe your style of music?
laviemusic25: I would say that it's life music. Music that deals with life.
Maeva: music that deals with life? girl you're only 26, what you been dealing with???
laviemusic25: Well....I was married at 18 and had my daughter and divorced at 21. I had to grow up quickly and I saw a lot of things at a early age with my ex-husband and as a young girl drugs and abuse was very real to me.
Maeva: dang, married, divorce, a kid...you had your hands full. So if you don't mind me asking, what kind of drugs did you use?
laviemusic25: Cigarettes, black and mild and marijuana. As I got older I went to liquor.
Maeva: Do you still smoke?
laviemusic25: No. I stopped
Maeva: drinking too ;-)
laviemusic25: I have drinks but I don't over do it.
Maeva: Ok, I know i'm getting all up in your business, but for real, what's really good with you? I heard you had an album release at the Hard Rock, tell me about that.
laviemusic25: It was awesome. It was a total success. Cd sales weren't great but the turn out was awesome.
Maeva: what's the name of your cd?
laviemusic25: Life music
Maeva: nice...so how many tracks are on it?
laviemusic25: Eleven. There is a bonus track that is not listed.
Maeva: ooh I love bonus tracks. So where can people find your cd?
laviemusic25: If they want it mailed to them my website. http://www.laviemusic.com/ or just email me and I will meet up with them. Working on getting distribution
Maeva: cool, so what's next for you now?
laviemusic25: Get the word out. Wait for what does next
Maeva: That's whats up, thanks for taking the time out to chat with me. I have one last question for you. If you had one thing to say to the entire world, what would that be?
laviemusic25: I'm quite excited about it because it's basically a retrospect of my journey through life and faith. I really hope that people are touched and inspired to go out and pursue their dreams after reading my book.

It's currently available for purchase through my online store and soon it will be available on Amazon, Barnes & Nobles, and other major online book retailers.

Portion of the proceeds will benefit youth programs and Haitian Relief Efforts. I would truly appreciate your support in making a change in today's world.

Also please stay tuned for further information on the "Change is Coming: A Call to Action Tour"

-Maeva

Change is Coming Campaign

In efforts to help end world hunger and poverty, Haitian born poet, Maeva “The Artist” Renaud has joined forces with organizations like Arts of Color Worship Arts Institute, Inc., ONE , Center for Education, Training & Holistic Approaches, Inc.
